And so the story goes...       Personalized information is indicated by (parentheses).
It was the first week of summer vacation. Scruff and (Child) were waiting impatiently with (Friends) for the bus that would carry them to Camp Happy Hollow. **Captions of kids talking... "Can you believe we have to spend a whole week at a place called Camp Happy Hollow?" "My mom says it's a great way to make new friends!" "Lighten up everybody! This could turn out to be an adventure!" "I don't like bugs, I'm just not into this nature thing."
McGruff, the famous crime dog, had come along to see his nephew Scruff safely off to camp. **Captions of kids talking... "Hey Scruff, isn't that your Uncle McGruff over there? I'll bet he's here to give you a few tips about staying out of trouble!" "No way! I know how to take care of myself!"
Suddenly, a blue van squealed around the corner and screeched to a halt beside the curb. Scruff and (Child), along with (Friends), scrambled to their feet and leaped backwards onto the grass! **Captions of kids talking... "Good Grief! How did he ever get a driver's license?" "Yikes! That was close! Who are those kids anyhow?" "Who cares? My whole life just flashed in front of my eyes, and it was too short!"
As Scruff and (Child) watched curiously with (Friends), the three young strangers tumbled out of the can and onto the grass. Judging by their gear, it seemed they too were on their way to Camp Happy Hollow. **Captions of people talking... "Have you ever seen those kids before, Scruff?" "Nope, but they look like pretty cool guys to me. Maybe they'll liven up this camp thing!" "Ummm, I wonder who these young men could be? They seem to be a bit rowdier than Scruff and his friends."
Just then, the bus rounded the corner and pulled up to the curb. It was time to climb aboard for the ride to Camp Happy Hollow. McGruff reminded Scruff about a few important safety tips before letting him climb aboard! **Captions of people talking... "Remember Scruff, if you run into anything you can't handle, just tell a responsible adult like a camp counselor. They are there to help you if you have any problems!" "Good Grief Unc! You worry too much. What could happen at a dumb old camp anyhow?" "Hey, quit pushing. What's the big hurry?" "Oh no! I forgot my camera!" "I can't believe I'm really going off to camp."
Soon the bus was under way. The kids from the blue van settled into seats behind Scruff and his friends. But before Scruff could say hello... **Captions of kids talking... "I'll bet these guys are going to be fun to hang out with at camp!" "I wouldn't count on it, Scruff." "Ummm, I don't know, Scruff. We don't know anything about them."
...the three newcomers were no longer in their seats. It was obvious that they had more on their minds than just introductions! **Captions of kids talking... "I'm Sam and this is Joe." "Hey, any of you kids want a cigarette?" "Hi, my name's Leon. You want a smoke?" "Not me! I'm on the basketball team and I need to keep my lungs in good shape!" "No thanks, I think cigarettes are totally gross! They make your clothes and your breath smell bad!" "I guess these kids aren't so cool after all. Smoking is really dumb!"
It wasn't long before Joe noticed that the bus driver was looking at the three of them suspiciously from the front of the bus. Afraid he would be seen, Joe quickly stuffed his cigarettes back into his bag. **Captions of kids talking... "Ummmm, this week is going to be a real drag if these kids don't loosen up and have some fun!" "Yeah, Leon, you're right about that!" "All I know is that it's going to be a long ride."
At long last the bus arrived at Camp Happy Hollow. It was after dark, but the moon was bright in the night sky. As the kids climbed sleepily down form the bus, they were met by a friendly camp counselor. **Captions of people talking... "Welcome to Camp Happy Hollow everyone! Grab your gear, and I'll show you to the bunkhouses." "Hey Scruff, you and your friends look like cool guys, you want to bunk with us?" "Say NO Scruff! They'll probably burn down the bunkhouse before morning!" "Thanks, but no thanks, Leon. I want to bunk in a smoke free zone!"
Soon, (Child) and the campers had to settle into their bunks for a good night's sleep. **Captions of kids talking... Get some sleep guys, we'll shake things up around here tomorrow." "Right on Joe, we'll show these babies how to have some real fun!" "Quiet! Did you hear a noise?" "Yikes, something is crawling up my pajama leg!" "I hope there aren't any bears out here." "Anybody bring a flashlight?" "It's really dark out here in the woods!"
Bright and early the next morning, Scruff and his friends met in the camp dining hall for breakfast. They were very excited when the counselor told them they were going on a nature hike in the woods. No one had ever been on a nature hike before! **Captions of people talking... "Oh no, a hike! I can't believe I'm here for a whole week!" "Cool! We'll probably get to see lots of bugs and snakes and..." "I know I'll get big blisters if I have to walk too far... HEY did you say SNAKES!" "Pass the toast, I'm starving." "Forget the toast Leon. Remember what we packed in our bags for later?"
Scruff and his friends soon began to enjoy the nature hike. They spotted a deer drinking from a stream and saw a hawk flying through the tall trees. None of the campers noticed that Sam, Joe and Leon had fallen behind. **Captions of people talking... "I told you this could be an adventure." "Wow! Did you see that bird?" "Hey, this hiking trip is fun, but you sure need to be in good shape!"
Well hidden behind the bushes, the three kids opened their backpacks and pulled out a couple of beers and their cigarettes. The beer was warm and tasted terrible, but they drank it anyhow, then tossed the empty cans behind a rock. **Captions of people talking... "Can you believe those kids are dumb enough to think they're having fun?" "Ummm... this beer is great, but I'm feeling a little dizzy." "I'm feeling kind of weird too!"
Soon, after catching up to the other hikers, Joe, Sam and Leon began to feel a little sick. Scruff and (Child) were puzzled by their strange behavior. They couldn't imagine what was wrong with them. **Captions of people talking... "What's wrong with Joe, Sam and Leon?" "I don't know, but they sure don't look like they're having any fun!" "UGHHH! Is Sam throwing up over there?"
Later, back at camp, Scruff and (Child) quickly changed into their bathing suits. It was time to head down to the lake for a swim. They grabbed their towels and sunscreen. A swim was a great way to cool off after the nature hike. **Captions of people talking... "Last one in is a rotten egg!"......
