Puma / Cougar Fun Facts: Though called by many names - including mountain lion, cougar, panther, and catamount - pumas are solitary and elusive. Once they roamed so abundantly throughout all of North and South America that different tribes and countries each had their own word for the largest American wildcat. Weighing 80 to 180 pounds (36 to 82 kg), pumas are 3.25 to 5.25 feet (1 to 1.6 m) in length with sweeping, expressive tails that extend 23.5 to 33.5 inches (60 to 85 cm). Pumas climb with ease and can leap 15 feet straight up into a tree. Their home ranges vary from 30 to over 300 square miles in size.
