Llamas are woolly mammals related to camels, domesticated thousands of years ago in the Andes Mountains of western South America. These animals are used as pack animals, and are raised for their wool, meat, and hides. Even their droppings are burned as fuel. Llamas have a life span of 15 to 28 years. Llamas make a humming sound and will spit to establish dominance. Llamas are 3 to 4 feet tall at the shoulder. Young llamas are called crias. Llamas eat mostly grasses, herbs, and other plant material. Llamas are ruminants; they have a three-part stomach. They partially chew their food; later, the food is regurgitated as a cud which the llama then chews thoroughly.
