Black Bear Fun Facts: Black bears are large, mostly harmless bears that live in forests, as well as swamps and desert scrub. These solitary mammals are North America's most familiar and common bears. Black Bears are up to 6 feet long and weigh up to 600 pounds. Their long, thick fur ranges in color from black to brown. Like all bears, they are flat-footed. Their front claws are longer than their rear claws. Black bears spend the winter season dormant in their dens, surviving on body fat they have built up by eating ravenously all summer and fall. Female black bears give birth to two or three cubs during the winter and nurse them in the den until spring, when all emerge in search of food. The cubs stay with their protective mother for about two years.
